Just a few shots of one of our ancestral tables here at Hounfo Racine Deesse Dereyale: This table is for the ancestors of Houngan Liam and Houngan Alistair, with comments by Houngan Liam.
My mother’s funeral was beautiful event, and her full length floral arrangement held many butterflies. At the end of the ceremonies these butterflies were collected and distributed amongst the family. These ones float above the crucifix and the rest of the altar, reminding me that my mother always watches over us. 🙂 I miss you mommy.
Maria wears Elekes that belonged to my ancestors. These elekes belonged to several different family members, but particularly the “Maria” for whom she was named.
“Jack” has personality, and each morning when we greet him we never know what he will look like, what expression he will wear or what he will have done with his clothes… Today, well, he’s obviously feeling playful since he has moved his hat to the side and has a little ‘player’ expression going on!
The statue of St. Teresa of Avila, or Teresa of the Little Child is particularly important to me. My sister’s name was Teresa and this was her patron Saint, her name sake, and the Saint to whom I entrust her constant elevation. Blessings be with you in all things St. Teresa, and please, hold my sister up, heal her and aid her and show her love that she may find peace and contentment in the hands of God.
Light serves many purposes when working with our ancestors. White candles help the spirits to be at peace, as well as elevating them closer to the right hand of God.
Maria and Jack, settled and at work 🙂
Orange Juice, candies, small jugs containing water and alcohol that was favoured by our ancestors are set around Maria and the doll the carries the ancestral lineage of both my husband and myself. “Jack” likes to sit back and watch over a small sharing urn of my mothers ashes, and here he will care for her for the next 7 months
Small statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Conception, that belonged to my godmother and sat on either side of her television have, been prepared and stuffed with herbs, oils and other items to assist the ancestors in their work.
The ancestral table. In the middle of this table sits a doll I have had with me for many years, her name is Maria and she carries the ancestral lineage of my mothers side of the family with her. The altar is also set with foods, drinks, and other items that are sacred or beloved by the ancestral spirits.
